Video Strategy
Part of Measuring owned video performance
Distinguishing video starts from meaningful viewing
Define a useful viewing point for a website video, separate it from playback starts and interpret progress data carefully.
A start records that playback began. A meaningful view is a chosen measure of whether playback reached the part intended to answer the viewer's question. Define that point for the video before examining results, then report starts and meaningful views separately.
Choose the useful point
Watch the video with its purpose in mind. For a demonstration, the decisive moment might be the completed action and visible result. For a process explanation, it might be the first clear answer and a condition that changes the next step. Record the relevant section or time and why it matters.
A percentage is a convenient proxy when useful information is spread across the video. It can mislead when the answer arrives early or after a long introduction. A fixed number of seconds also means different things in a short clip and a long tutorial. Choose the threshold before reviewing the data, so you do not select one because it yields an attractive rate.
Count comparable events
| Measure | Working definition | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible page view | A page view where the intended video placement was available | The player may not have been noticed |
| Start | Playback begins | Automatic playback and replays may create additional starts |
| Meaningful view | Playback reaches the selected point | It does not prove attention or understanding |
| Completion | Playback reaches the end | The end may be unnecessary for the task |
State whether a rate uses page views, starts or people as its denominator. Keep raw counts beside percentages. If start events form the numerator and page views the denominator, repeat plays can push a rate above 100%; count one start per eligible page view, or report replays separately. Label automatic starts instead of treating them as deliberate plays.
Google Analytics events measure interactions on a website or app. If an automatic, enhanced or recommended event does not fit the measurement need, Google Analytics supports defining a custom event. A standard milestone is useful only if it reasonably matches the section you chose. A more exact point needs a supported event and a checked implementation.
Key Metrics for Video Engagement (GA4)
- Eligible Page Views
- Page views where video was present
- Video Starts
- Playback initiation events
- Meaningful Views
- Playback reached defined useful point
- Completion Rate
- Percentage reaching end of video
Validate and interpret the result
On the actual page, inspect what arrives when playback starts, pauses, resumes, skips ahead, replays and finishes. Check whether events identify the right video and placement, and whether a seek can satisfy the selected progress measure. Behaviour depends on the player and implementation; a progress event alone does not establish continuous watching.
Many starts followed by few meaningful views suggest investigating the opening, player, page fit and chosen threshold. A high completion rate among a small group of starters does not mean most page visitors received the answer.
Low completion may be harmless when the answer came earlier. Before reporting a change, verify that the event used for the threshold corresponds to the intended section and that its denominator matches the stated unit.
